150k android Apps

Android is built on the Linux kernel version 2.6. Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middle-ware and key applications. It’s estimated that the number of android application could reach as high as 150,000 by the end of 2010. iPhone has managed to reached this number in a very short span of time. Will Android be able to replicate that in a year and get closer to iPhone’s hit list?

gPhone

Not sure if this phone or any other android based phone will be called gPhone. But, Google has confirmed that the phone to be released in the early Jan 2010 would be called Nexus One. Doubt if it will have Google branding and be distributed by Google as this is built by HTC Or is this merely a test for new features in Android. The big "?" would be: can "Nexus One" stand tall against the iPhone ?

iDon't

Since the time Apple released its iPhone, many other manufacturers have come up with handsets that were supposed to become ‘iPhone Killers’. None has succeeded so far other than the Motorola DROID which can be a serious contender to the crown of the iPhone 3GS. Both phones are available from their respective carriers at $199 with contracts of 2 years. Time magazine has made the Motorola Droid its number 1 gadget of the year. The 30-second Droid Does commercial is seen as a direct shot at Apple and the iPhone. The commercial is all about what the new Motorola Droid can do that the iPhone can’t. It says:
iDon’t have a real keyboard
iDon’t run simultaneous applications
iDon’t take 5-megapixel pictures
iDon’t customize
iDon’t run widgets
iDon’t allow open development
iDon’t take pictures in the dark
iDon’t have interchangeable batteries
“Everything iDon’t”
Droid Does
The Motorola iDont ads seem to have created a lot of hype around the new Droid phone.

DOS games on your latest OS

Do you remember those school days when we were playing DAVE, Aladdin and other DOS games?
If you are using some of the latest operating systems like Windows 7 or Vista, chances are that these games won’t work as these games were designed for 16-bit systems. There are some simple workarounds that you can try out that will help you play your favorite DOS games on any of the computer with the latest operating system.
The easiest way to run DOS games on your computer is through DOSBox.
(most popular GUI frontends for DOSBox)
You can install this program like any other Windows application and it is ready for use immediately after the installation. To install a DOS game, simply use the import wizard or drag-and-drop the zip archive file (that contains the DOS program) into the D-Fend Reloaded window. The other good part is that you can download most popular DOS games from the web for free and legally.

3D TV

LG is the first TV manufacturer in the world to cooperate with a digital satellite broadcaster to map the standards for 3D images ranging from technologies, to devices and broadcasting content. LG has been committed to bringing active TVs that only require shutter glasses to experience 3D images, as well as the passive models that include a filter over the screen. In addition, LG has developed a chipset to handle various types of 3D broadcast signals and continues to develop correcting technology that automatically controls the brightness of overlapped parts on each eye to ensure optimum 3D images. That’s great to hear, but sad thing is that we still need to wear those 3D glasses.

Can SPDY speedup data flow?

SPDY (pronounced "SPeeDY") as the name says to Speed up data flow (more like going by Space shuttle instead of Boeing 747) with less congestion over the network when compared to HTTP. This is an application-layer protocol for transporting content over the web and is a new protocol that is being developed. Experimented on Google Chrome browser by Google, the performance of SPDY in loading a web page is 64% faster when compared to HTTP. The main intension of SPDY is to greatly reduce latency. SPDY uses TCP as the underlying transport layer, so requires no changes to existing networking infrastructure. SPDY allows for unlimited concurrent streams over a single TCP connection, there by allowing you to watch multiple videos online at the same time ;). So, is SPDY just another protocol or the future for faster web access ?

Google Chrome OS

Google Chrome OS is an open source operating system designed by Google to work exclusively with web applications. Chrome OS is set to have a publicly available stable release during the second half of 2010. The operating system is based on Linux and targets specifically designed hardware. The user interface takes a minimalist approach, resembling that of the Chrome web browser. Because the browser will be the only application residing on the device, Google Chrome OS is aimed at users who spend most of their computer time on the Internet.
Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. Google is going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and we are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year. The software architecture is simple - Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel. For application developers, the web is the platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite web technologies. And of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform.

I have tried it myself as shown in the above pic where I have installed Windows 7 as the host OS and am running Chrome OS on Sun Microsystem's virtual Machine. It just takes 7 seconds to boot and will directly ask for your gmail user ID and password. It's a must try. Will keep u all posted on my upcomming blogs.
