Mount Tambora, on the island of Sumbawa in Indonesia is 10 times bigger than Krakatoa. Tambora started to grumble noticeably in 1812, building up to a cataclysmic eruption in April 1815. The eruption flung vast amounts of dust and ash into the atmosphere, cooling global temperatures for months afterwards. As a result, the following year – 1816 – became known as the "year without a summer".
